cliff has brown skin, grey eyes, and wavy dark blue hair. he's very tall and quite muscular from spending so much time adventuring down in various mines. he tends to carry himself with a chipper, lively demeanor, and he almost always wears his trusty miner's hat. (the flashlight on it is convenient, okay?)

cliff changes his outfit in accordance to the current season in mistria. he also has some bonus outfits for formal events and the like.

spring - cliff wears a black leather jacket over a white shirt, paired with scuffed jeans that have seen better days. he also wears boots with a layer of plated steel for protection. (miner's helmet, jacket and tee, adventurer's pants, miner's boots)
summer - cliff swaps his white shirt and jacket combo out for a simple black vest. gotta stay cool! he wears capri jeans along with it, as well as his normal boots. (miner's helmet, tank top, shorts, miner's boots)
fall - cliff wears a long-sleeved, dark blue plaid shirt and simple black pants. those boots have yet to be changed. (miner's helmet, plaid flannel, pants, miner's boots)
winter - cliff wears thick black mining coveralls during the wintertime. they're perfect for keeping out the cold. ...and, yeah, the boots are a year-long thing. (miner's hat, miner's jumpsuit, miner's boots)

formal - after getting told off for showing up to the harvest festival in his miner gear, cliff bought a dark purple suit there and changed into it. it became his standard outfit for formal events. the hat provided with it has a crystal berry accessory pinned to it. ...he's still weraring the boots, though.(berry suit, berry hat, miner's boots)
swimsuit - worn whenever cliff is dragged over to the beach, this outfit consists of dark blue shorts. he also wears an old straw hat decorated with fishing lures to shield his face from the sun. he doesn't wear his boots to the beach, but, rather, a pair of black sandals. farmer - cliff isn't exactly a farmer, but he certainly farms, so... why not look the part? these are the classic bokumono-inspired overalls (except cliff's are black), worn with a red bandana around cliff's neck. he also wears the equally classic backwards hat of the bokumono protagonist, pete. his mining boots are back, too. sage of the earth - what is the purpose of this outfit...? it's an aged brown robe and a slightly rusted circlet with a bright green gem embedded in it. (sage of the earth gem circlet, sage of the earth robe, sage of the earth sandals)

almost always cheerful, cliff is a very energetic person. bubbly and kind, he wants to help people out as best as he can and has a huge interest in all things underground - from seemingly mundane stones to precious gems. his optimism can absolutely veer into the territory of… well… foolishness, though. he can be overly trusting and very gullible; he's fallen victim to an impressive number of scams. moreover, cliff’s interest in mining can make him a little bit difficult to get close to him as a person, since he has a tendency to get absorbed in the so-called ‘secrets of the mines.’ this means he might vanish down in them for entire days, and he might also ramble on and on about his adventures down there if you talk to him… but, hey, they’re fun adventures! cliff has no shortage of hilarious stories about various monsters and rocks. he cares deeply for mistria’s mines and wants to protect the world that they harbor.

though he isn’t booksmart in the slightest, cliff is extremely eager to learn more about the world and makes for a very loyal friend! he also takes his farmwork very seriously despite his major focus being on mistria's mines. he likes taking care of animals in particular and enjoys naming them after precious metals and stones.

cliff never knew his biological parents, as he was abandoned at an orphanage in aldaria's capital shortly after being born. owned by an extremely skeevy man, cliff 'worked' as a scavenger when he was a child in what was definitely an illegal business. given the capital's abundance of jewelers, cliff was frequently tasked with finding scrap metals and flawed gems that the orphanage owner could sell to up-and-coming artisans who wouldn't know any better. he mostly stole discarded items from the mining businesses around the capital, but occasionally snuck down into mines, too.

while these roots were pretty messed up, cliff found himself fascinated by ores and the various rarities that one could find in them. this fascination instilled a true passion for the underground in him; he loved how a whole other world existed below the busy surface of the capital. he pursued this once he was old enough to depart from the orphanage, working as a miner in a bunch of different mines - though his gullible nature meant that he fell for numerous schemes (some of which were even tied to the man who owned the orphanage). once he was able to dig around and go on his underground adventures, cliff didn't really care. unfortunately, this meant he was oftentimes severely underpaid, and many of his discoveries were claimed by other individuals.

after years of getting by, cliff paid a visit to the adventurer's guild in search of a new job requiring his particular skillset. there, he saw that a small town called mistria was offering a large plot of land in exchange for aid. cliff knew that the town had recently been struck by an earthquake and wondered how the local mines were doing. previously, he couldn't afford a trip over there - but he figured that if he took the job, he'd be able to check things out for himself... and potentially stop getting scammed by opportunistic merchants in the capital. granted, he didn't know the first thing about using the land being offered in exchange for his services, but he figured that dirt was dirt and that he'd work everything out in due time.
